If you are afraid of the dark then you can turn the light on, but if there is no light switch then what do you do?

With all of the world´s attention focused on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman convicted of adultery and condemned to be stoned to death by the Iranian authorities (and whose life is currently hanging in the balance), the new play “Hidden Place” by British writer and director Ishwar Maharaj was inspired by the Ashtiani case and that of 2 Iranian teenagers (Mahmoud Asqari and Ayad Marhouni) who were publicly executed by hanging in 2005 for homosexual ‘offences’. The play explores what it is like to live under a fascist regime where the only means of escape might be the one you construct in your head; a secret place safe from harm, a sanctuary where your fantasies can roam free and you are allowed to be who you are and live as you choose. “Hidden Place” is about finding a light when all around you is enveloped in darkness.

The play is performed in English.
